Mrs. Kottke's ELA Classes

Welcome to 6th grade! I'm so excited to delve into the elements of language and writing with you. We will be reading many different types of text (fiction and non-fiction), as well as engaging in speaking and listening opportunities. You will be working collaboratively with your peers, as well as independently. I am here to help you every step of the way. I am available during lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays for extended learning time, as well as Thursday afternoon for after school tutoring from 2:45-3:30. I am available by telephone at 843-763-1529 ext. 20100, as well as by email at mary_kottke@charleston.k12.sc.us. Please contact me anytime with questions. I look forward to working with you all!

*Copies of assignments can be found on my calendar (left tool bar).

First Nine Weeks: The theme for our first unit is overcoming fears and challenges. This is a cross-curricular unit with Ms. Holstein's class during your study of weather and weather systems. To expand your knowledge of weather and weather systems, we will be reading Eye of the Storm by Kate Messner. I will have a class set of novels available to use at school, but you may want to purchase your own copy. Purchasing a novel is not required. In addition to weather, the book covers topics such as: divorce/family dynamics, genetically modified foods/bio-botanicals, biometric security (fingerprint/retina scanning), using storms as weapons of mass destruction (war), cellular generation/human cloning, robotics/artificial intelligence, and meteorology/storm dissipation.
